Breathwork helped my breathlessness but not in the way I expected

I came to breathwork because of post-COVID breathlessness. What helped wasn't deep breathing (which actually made me dizzy) but slow, extended exhales. Box breathing made things worse. 4-7-8 breathing (inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8) helped a lot. I think the extended exhale activates the parasympathetic system which calmed the breathlessness reflex. I'm not a doctor, this is just my experience.
